Ducatitours/REDBIKE Tours Newsletter - 9 February 2011

"Happy New Year" to everyone - even if a little late!

We move into the 2011 season with more reasons than ever for you to come and ride a Ducati with us!

For a starter we have just launched a new website! We have tried to debug everything, but if you have any problems or just want to give us some feedback, please email us at ducatitours@gmail.com

Race event tours
You may have heard a rumour that Valentino Rossi is riding a Ducati in MotoGP for 2011......We still have a couple of places left for Mugello (his first race in Italy on Ducati) and at a squeeze we can find 1 or 2 places for Misano (Rossi\'s home track) but if you are interested - book now!!! Click on the links for Italian GP and San Marino GP to view the itineraries and book online

We also still running trips to the World Superbike races at Misano and Imola where you can get to see some of the best racing around. Of course there is no official Ducati team, but they are still giving serious support to some of the 'private' race teams and it promises to be a great season. We are again running a weekend option for the Misano superbikes round, but places are getting limited!

Bikes

The fleet for 2011 is much as 2010 with a couple of new bikes being added and a couple of older models going to pasture. We are still undecided on the Diavel as it feels kind of long and heavy for the riding we have in this area. If anyone has strong feelings as to whether we should buy one or not, let us know!

Itinerary roundup:

For 2011 we have not added new itineraries to the summer season but we are looking at the possibility of Autumn and/or Spring Ducati tours in Southern California. Details are being worked on as I write this. If you are interested in a few days riding a Ducati in California this October/November or in the early part of 2012 please email us quoting California in the subject line.

In 2010 we tested a new itinerary with a difference, The Tuscan Ducati Holiday. The trip is designed to be highly flexible and convenient and offer much of the benefits of our standard tour packages, all at a super low price. For 2011 we are running this tour a number of times due to the highly positive feedback we gained from the clients who opted for it in 2010. For more details follow this link

Online Booking

With the new website we introduce online availability and booking of rental bikes* (all tours can be checked and booked online also). Now you can go to the page of the model you want and hit the "Book this bike" button, or go to the general booking page, choose rentals, enter your dates and see what is available for your trip along with the rental costs.

We also have incorporated a "Pay Now" feature that will save you 10%** from your booking.

If you prefer to email we can of course still handle bookings in the traditional manner, and certainly for groups or special requests we advise the email/telephone route.

Rental rates have also been reduced for most models for 2011

* Certain models are reserved or require confirmation from REDBIKE Tours staff
** 5% on certain models

For rental clients we can still offer a set of Ducati panniers/top case for the Multistrada models, Garmin Zumo 550 & 660 GPS navigation system (which can be connected to any bike) and Ventura bike packs for the Monster 1100 and Monster 696 (we also have these available for 848 and 1098S - if you really want!) and of course full luggage for the ST3. The ST3 now also sports a set of heated grips and a set of Ducati Performance exhausts. To add to the 'touring' options, the GT1000 now has a set of leather panniers to complement its all round abilities.

A lap of the USA

Thank you to all those who came and spoke with us at the recent IMS shows in Seattle, Long Beach, Washigton DC, New York and Minneapolis. It was great to see you all and we hope to be meeting again soon in a Ducati in Italy!

Now that we are back at base, we are working through the contact list of the people we met and you will be receiving an email very soon!

Remember!!!!

If you are interested in a personalised trip, extensions (or shortening) of any of the tours as described on the site or have a possible group booking to make, email us at ducatitours@gmail.com with your requirements and we will always do our best to provide for your particular holiday needs.

Hoping you all have a great 2011 - come and ride with us when you can!

1198 versus Lamborghini Gallardo

Yes its fast - yes its cool but is it worth the outlay? Torque is huge and acceleration instant. Brakes and grip are phenomenal but traffic just keeps on getting in the way. Unless you want to be quickly arrested for antisocial behavior you just cannot hustle a car like this past over road users in the same way you can on the bike.

The power also runs out surprisingly quickly after (even a Ducati) rev range and the limiter is not so subtle......

Round a wet road you have the luxury of 4 wheels, lots of traction control and ABS but you still get the impression of teetering on the edge of grip - not an edge that you would want to fall over either!

Would I buy one - yes if money was no object - but I think a Ferrari will always be first on my list..........And for a quick fix in any situation - take the bike!

If you want to try a car like this as part of your Tuscan holiday, let us know and we will organise the rental!

Multistrada 1200S - If you own a GS, KTM, V-Strom or Varadeo.......don't try this bike

Our new Multistrada has arrived and a small blast around the countryside has been performed - all in the interests of science!

So what is it like?
As the title hints, this is a very impressive bike! The engine has loads of low end and middle range power (the top end is still out of bounds as we are running-in), the suspension works extremely well, the brakes are powerful and the seat is comfortable.

Compared to a GS.......think of a GS with proper suspension, some power, put some properly grippy tyres on and make it look like something other than an industrial accident and you get close to a Multistrada 1200!

Any gripes?

The ABS cuts in too early on dry roads, worryingly so when riding it like a 1198S......perhaps not the intended method of riding for a bike like this, but unlike its 'competition' a way of riding that is easy to do. And the centrestand touches down on left handers a little too easily.

The electronics?
It took a minute or two to figure the configuration controls out but (at least when brand new) it all works really well. The difference between "150 High" and "150 Low" power settings don't seem particularly noticeable, and the soft "100 hp" option still lifts the front wheel off the throttle in first.....

How is it compared to the old Multistrada?
Improved in every sense. It looks better, its more comfortable, the engine is much more powerful and the brakes (without ABS) work better. It is an inch or so higher in the saddle (a little too tall for me in fact) and there is the issue with the centrestand - but at least it has one!

Overall
As I say above, if you own a GS or similar and don't want to feel like you have bought a turkey........don't ride this bike!
